2004 Goble Family Reunion
It may sound like it’s too
early to begin to discuss the next Goble Reunion, but it will be here before we
know it. According to our bylaws the
next reunion should be held in the middle of the country. There are a variety of states and places to
consider. We will be gathering the
reunion committee (on-line) to begin to make the arrangements sometime this
summer. We normally try to hold the
affair during the summer months so that cousins with younger children can plan
to attend. That would give us a window
of June through August of 2007. Please send us your
suggestions.

GOBLEHOLM LODGE[1]
History of the CAW Family Education Centre
In the
1950s, the former Region 7 of the Canadian UAW first explored the idea of an
education facility for Canadian union members. The Centre would offer education
programs, and hold Council and other leadership meetings. Since August was a
slow period for classes and meetings, the plan was to reserve this time for
vacationers.
A
committee was struck to find a suitable site for such a union facility, and in
1956 they discovered the Gobleholm Lodge, a 12-1/2 acre site on the shores of
Lake Huron, one mile south of Port Elgin, Ontario. It was described in the
following way:
The lodge is frame construction and well painted, with a plastered
interior. The main lodge has a natural field stone fireplace, office, two
dining rooms which seat over 75, 16 rooms and four baths. There are 10 or 12
cabins with two double beds and a two-piece bath in each.
I recently heard from Robert C. Higgins about the lodge. When he was a young boy about 5 or 6 years
old, his family purchased the lodge and he provided the photograph above along
with fond memories.

CEDRIC WEEHUNT
"Lum and Abner"
aired on radio as a fifteen-minute comedy serial from 1931 thru 1948, becoming
a half-hour weekly comedy series from 1948-1950 and returning to quarter-hour
format in 1953, ending its run in 1954. The subtle and witty shows stared
Chester Lauck and Norris "Tuffy" Goff as Lum Edwards and Abner
Peabody, owners and proprietors of the Jot 'Em Down Store in Pine Ridge,
Arkansas.
Lauck and Goff were
both born and raised in Arkansas and always maintained a strong love and
affection for the characters they met and grew up with in their home state -
quirks and all. One of these colorful
characters was Cedric Weehunt played by Edward Lasker Goble.[2]
Ed Lasker Goble (1906-1955) was born and raised in the Town of Pine Ridge Arkansas, one of 4 children born to John Gobble/Goble and JoAnn Lewis of our German Goble tree.

THE
JINRIKISHA[3]
The Jinrikisha was
actually invented by a Goble. Most of you know this story, but for those who
are new to our family of researchers, enjoy!
The Jinrikisha/jinricksha is a small, two-wheeled
Oriental vehicle, chiefly for passenger use, drawn by one man. In 1937 a
Readers Digest article titled So That's How It Started reported:
The Jinrikisha, commonly thought to have been for centuries a purely Japanese
vehicle, was actually invented in 1871 at Yokohama by a poor American Baptist
missionary, the Reverend Jonathan Goble. Desiring to give his sick wife
gentle outdoor exercise, he showed a Japanese carpenter the picture of a baby
carriage in Godey's Lady's Book, and suggested the plan and form. The result,
the Jinrikisha, quickly displaced the palanquin (a covered litter or couch
carried on poles by four or six bearers); and soon the Reverend Goble's
invention was used around the world, especially where labor was cheap.

Paolo Joseph
Freccia, the 9th great-grandson of John and Sarah (Goble) Shepard, was born
April 12, 2006, in Menlo Park, San Mateo Co., CA. He is the son of Tobias
(Toby) and Lisa (Giblin) Freccia. He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20 1/2
inches long.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
On May 21, 2006 Margaret
Emma (11) Goble Faulkner was taken to the hospital with leg pain and unable
to walk. After 3 days in the hospital
having had many tests and becoming ill from pain medications Margaret was moved
to a convalescent home near her family.
She has been diagnosed with osteonacrosis of the knee. Margaret is 89 years old and has attended
every Goble Reunion we’ve had! She is
recovering and should be home soon.

held on the 3rd Sunday in August at the Guntersville Lake beach in
Guntersville, Alabama. Everyone is

Sutton Goggans
1961-2006 Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2 p.m. at Mayo
Memorial United Methodist Church in Paintsville, Ky., for Jeffrey Sutton Goggans,
44, of Paintsville, who passed away Sunday, March 26 at his residence. Mr.
Goggans was born Dec. 8, 1961 in Atlanta, Ga., son of Lavaugh T. “Bunk” and
Glenda Barnett Goggans. He was employed with Goggans Construction Company and
was a member of Mayo Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to
his parents are his former wife, Tracy Goble Goggans; two sons, Elijah
and Cole Goggans, both of Staffordsville, Ky.; one brother, Dr. Phillip Neal
(Jennifer) Goggans of Seattle, Wash.; and one nephew and two nieces. The
service will be officiated by the Rev. John Boyd, with entombment following in
the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville. Arrangements under the direction

Christian Burial for Thomas “Ray” Goble, 70, Aurora, was Thursday, March 16, 2006,
at St. Mary Catholic Church, Aurora, with burial in Riverview Cemetery,
Aurora. Rullman Hunger Denney Funeral Home, Aurora, was in charge of the
arrangements. Mr.
Goble died Sunday, March 12, in Aurora. He was a line worker for Batesville
Casket Company, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of Aurora Moose
Lodge, Aurora Eagles, St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He is
survived by three brothers, Louis Goble, Cincinnati, Richard Goble,
Lawrenceburg and Edward Goble, Batesville, and a sister, Mary Goble, Aurora.

Eileen Goble,
of Westminster, died of natural causes Thursday, March 9, 2006, in Thornton.
She was 89. The
daughter of Nelson Buckles and Carrie Higbee Buckles, she was born Dec. 2,
1916, in Otego, Kan. She married Martin Goble on Dec. 9, 1939, in
Denver. He died. Mrs.
Goble moved to Boulder in 1964, and to Westminster in 2000.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Goble, of Broomfield, and Gene
Goble, of Lakewood; a sister, Lois Grand, of Aurora; and five grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her brother, Lyle Buckles; and a sister, Betti Casey. A
memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Crist Mortuary Chapel, 3395

GOBLE HICKORY - Floyd
C. Goble, 69, passed away March 2, 2006, in Arcadia, Calif. He was born
Jan. 14, 1937, in Catawba County. He proudly served two years in the U.S. Army. He
moved to California in 1976 and opened his own business, Goble’s Upholstery,
in Temple City and later in San Gabriel. He belonged to the Moose, Lions Club
and Elks. Elkdom was an important part of his life. He was preceded in death by his mother,
father, three brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his best friend and love of his life, Joan; two
daughters, Kathy and husband, Louis Long, and Sandy and husband, Daniel
Huffman; three grandchildren, Brittany and Brandon Long and Cody Huffman;
three sisters; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Probably the

Salina, KS Gladys Imogene Goble
HAYS Gladys Imogene Goble, 87, Hays, died Wednesday, April 5,
2006.
Mrs. Goble was born Gladys Imogene Martin on Jan. 29, 1919, in
Plainville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold M., in 2004; a son,
Florace; and a granddaughter.
Survivors include a son, Mervyn of WaKeeney; three daughters, Gail
Dobson, Maxine Wellbrock and Connie Korbe, all of Hays; 24 grandchildren; 39
great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church,
Plainville. Burial will be in Plainville City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel
Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays 67601, and from 1 p.m. to service time

And as a Rotarian, he was awarded the organization's prestigious Paul
Harris Award in recognition of his philanthropic work and willingness to
reach out to those in need.
Mr. Goble, of Oakmont, owner of Goble Refrigeration, died of kidney
failure on Monday, April 10, 2006, at his home. He was 73.
His daughter, JoAnn Schaub, said Mr. Goble was an outgoing and
charismatic father who encouraged her at an early age to be her own person.
"Dad thought that I should work in the trust department of a bank
after I completed college. He thought such an experience would help me to
become self-reliant and independent and to be able to care for myself.
"I followed his advice, and today I am the vice president of the
trust department in a bank in Tulsa, Okla., where my husband and I make our
home."
His son, J. Vance Goble, of Oakmont, the owner of Goble Manufacturing
Co., a firm that specializes in building custom refrigeration equipment for
industry, said his father was one of the best in the refrigeration business.
"At one time we had 14 employees. Dad was tough. It could be
difficult at times, but it was a rewarding experience. I learned so much from
him. We worked together for 18 years, until I branched out and began my own
business."
His son recalled Mr. Goble's commitment to the Oakmont Rotary Club,
and the numerous times he helped his father with such Rotary events as
preparing the float for community Christmas parades.
"I can still remember when Dad was president of the Oakmont
Rotary and how he, along with his fellow Rotarians, raised funds for a
variety of needy causes, including scholarships."
Born and raised in Oakmont, Mr. Goble was one of three children of
Albert G. and Estelle Schmidt Goble. His father was employed by Edgewater
Steel Co. and his mother taught third grade for years in the Oakmont School
District.
In 1951, following graduation from Oakmont High School, where he
played football, Mr. Vance spent a year at Washington & Jefferson College
in Washington County before enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh.
While at Pitt, Mr. Goble in 1955 met Carol Marchase, of Highland Park,
whose father, Joseph Marchase, was the owner of a refrigeration business in
the Strip District. They were married in 1956.
"Mom often said she had no doubts that she would marry Dad when
they met," said Schaub. "She said that she could see that he was a
man of integrity, besides being handsome."
Mrs. Goble died in 1977.
Upon graduating from Pitt in 1958 with a degree in business
administration, Mr. Goble joined his father-in-law's firm. "Dad worked
with my grandfather up until the time he started his own refrigeration
business in 1975," said Schaub.
Mr. Goble was a member of the Oakmont Yacht Club and relaxed by taking
his family on boat outings on the Allegheny River.
In addition to his daughter and son, Mr. Goble is survived by a
sister, Karel Beck of Longboat Key, Fla.; and two aunts, Susie Hall, of
Alaska, and June Pearson, of Hubbard, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Jacks. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
